So Fades the Shining Star

“Didn’t you used to be whatsisname?”
so fades the shining star
from the better days by far;
where do the players go
at the ending of the show.
“Weren’t you the person in whatsitcalled?
the spotlights dim and shrink
in the time it takes to blink.

“Didn’t you used to be someone?”
what life seeks to replace
the poster’s yellowing face
on the empty dressing room wall
at the final curtain call?
“No, you don’t look nothing like him!”
and the legends curl and die,
steal the dreams from a once golden eye.
