So Cold and So Sweet
-William Carlos Williams
For you
I hold out-
a figment of thought,
like a twig holds out juice
from the fig tree,
from branches, trunks
and roots,
from the ground
and people draped
all around
like fallen fruit
forgotten
by their trees
For you,
the day comes
the way it leaves
a taste of fig
that was never there
