G'day Sara … the snake charmers down here advise us that in an encounter, the snake is more frightened than us - THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! - thank you Sara - Lindsay

Laurie, Well, the rattle snake has some deadly venom which can kill quickly or it can be a long painful battle with death winning so that is very scary. I did not know that I was dealing with a rattlesnake at the start and by the time I did realize that I was dealing with one I knew that he needed to be dead or go on somewhere besides our back yard. Thanks for stopping by. Sara

Darlene, Yes, running is a good thing to do when you encounter a poisonous snake. I was thinking of my family who might encounter the snake unaware of its presence. Sara

Rattlers are highly prevalent in Georgia. They are regarded as dangerous, and rightly so. An encounter with one, as described in your poem, is chilling to say the least. I'm pleased to know that you were not bitten. The excruciating pain between bite and imminent death is horrific. Even if death does not occur, the pain is near intolerable. The members of Poetry Soup would have suffered a great loss should you have been bitten and succumbed to death. We enjoy your poems so much!!

Curtis, There is a picture in a local restaurant here where someone killed a diamond back that is longer than the man is tall which I guess makes the rattler around 6 foot and it was very large around. I would imagine it would pack a large amount of venom. I am glad that it was not in my herb garden. Thanks for the visit to my page. I appreciate the time spent here. Sara

Jack, No, you would not want to meet a rattle snake nor a copperhead either. They don't make very good friends. Sara

Sheri, Well I understand it completely. If it bites you death could be the outcome with a lot of pain and suffering between the bite and death. I let it live but I did try to kill it with a knife that I had in my hand. Sara

M.L., It was really scary when I realized what I was facing for at first I thought it was a type of chicken snake that we have around here, then I thought it was a copperhead, then I realized it was a rattler when it rose up and started rattling and showing its fangs. I still am apprehensive when I go out there. Thanks for the visit to my page. Sara
