Small Child Asleep

SMALL CHILD ASLEEP

My son’s day is over, he’s asleep
No more excited alarms
Caught in mid-play and leap
By Morpheus’s arms

Behind the bedroom door
Unfinished choc bar, half-built lego
Toy debris litters the floor
With his energy of an hour ago

A drawing of the cat playing -
They were running wild.
Pile of socks old and fraying -
I remember when he smiled.

I overlook the mess
See the person in the child
Look closely at his success
Rather than his mistakes all piled

And hope that the Lord will rather
Turn a blind eye to my faults
With the love of a father
When my day halts
