Slipping Away

Her eyes bright from unshed tears, she is squeezing my hand as her lip quivers the grip tightens, I'm feeling love in that grip and I hold it dear. Words go unsaid night after night and I'm pondering how to take the pain, the grief and her suffering away. Days turn to months, then years. Its agony now, she is escaping the pain. Her eyes dull, her bottle close it seems a comfort is there. Its sad to see her like that, grasping the bottle like she used to hold my hand. I'm still holding her at night even though she is talking in a drunken slumber to no one. Its over, but we don't know it, we're holding on and on, maybe its the love felt and the passions spent from days gone by.
