Notes About The Poem

Sleeping Dogs

I have five dogs
Right now all laying around me
Happily, contentedly,
Apparently even blissfully sleeping
While I watch the TV news
Catching up on the latest thing
Humans are doing,
For better or worse.
Although usually the worse.

Of course I let the sleeping dogs lie
Because I love them all dearly,
Happy for them in their innocence
If not ignorance.

As for their ignorance, which surely it is,
I will stand in front of them willingly
Guarding, blocking and defending
Taking it on myself,
If it ever comes to that,
Because innocence is more important
Than ignorance any day.

But that’s the way of the world
Isn’t it,
Humans take the fall
And their dogs get to lie sleeping,
Probably even dreaming
Of their wonderful humans
Taking the fall, ignorantly if not innocently,
Sufferingly endlessly suffering
As if that and all the news they consume
Makes them all the better,
While their dogs lie sleeping contentedly
Even blissfully.

Yet knowing what you know
Which would you choose,
Ignorance and bliss,
Or all this suffering of humanity?

I know what I choose,
It’s what I have.
