Silently We Watch Night Come
As a bat weaves about in the warm evening air
I sip iced tea and rock in my front porch chair
A gecko sits upon the wooden window frame
Stalking moths drawn to the light through the panes
Quail hustle off to settle their brood for the night
Always choosing to run instead of taking flight
Off in the distance coyotes start singing
I look up and notice a spider web clinging
Golden sun reflects off the web in the rafters
From a neighbors home I hear children laughter
The six O'clock train blows its horn going through town
Far enough away to be a sad mournful sound
My husband comes out, sits beside me, joins hands
Silently we watch night take over the land
