Notes About The Poem

[a] Paraphrase from a line in the song "Love Song" by Tesla

[b] Quote first appeared in a Methodist church announcement in an Iowa newspaper from 1926

[c] “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”…..let him turn away from evil and do good; let him seek peace and pursue it.” Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness." 1 Peter 1:15-16; 3:11; 1 Timothy 6:11b

Sigmund Void

Hemming and hawing this feeling keeps gnawing at my mind
Why look to Freud his own advice was void he couldn’t pick a side

I have aces and a joker, he had a tarot card hand
With all the mysticism all you grasp at is sand

The hummingbird hums because he doesn’t know what to sing [a]
And if you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything [b]

So says Freud that it’s the pursuit of happiness, (that unstable quest)
(And Freud being dead) Jesus said it’s the pursuit of holiness, that's best [c]
