Notes About The Poem

The line dividing pain and wisdom is fluid, and that suffering eventually transforms into insight, provides a universally relatable and deeply comforting conclusion.

Shifting Horizon

An old man walked along the ocean shore,
The heavy weight of all he’d lost before
Still pressing down upon his tired stride,
An aching rhythm matching with the tide.
He stared out far to where the ocean blue
Dissolved into the sky’s expansive hue,
A solid line where water touched the air,
A distinct boundary cleanly cutting there.

For years, he’d lived within a rigid space,
Dividing life by what he had to face.
The grief was here, the happiness was there,
A clean divide he guarded with despair.
He thought the sting of all his darkest years
Was separate from the wisdom of the seers,
A permanent wall of unforgotten pain,
Like desert sand divided from the rain.

But as he walked, he noticed with a start,
The line out far was playing with his heart.
With every forward pace upon the sand,
The boundary shifted o'er the fluid land.
The sky and water didn't truly fight,
They bled together in a single light—
An elegant illusion of the eye,
Where earth was softly melting into sky.

He smiled and let the old divisions go,
And watched the fading shoreline soft and slow.
The line where pain and wisdom choose to meet
Is just a boundary shifting at our feet;
The hardest years we carry in our prime
Become our greatest lessons over time.
