Notes About The Poem

Shell of a Man

His growth stunted
Not a mean bone
In his body
Nor a spine
To stand and
Be good to himself

Beaten since a kid
Into subdued
Submission

Echoes of
His heart
Beating
Within a
Vacuum
In the depths of
Sunken shame

Many children are ruined early in life by abuse. You poem makes me sad as it should. My heart aches for him weather he is real or not and that makes you a terrific poet.

In a mere 41 words you have captured the essence of what life is like for so many. "not a spine to stand and be good to himself," and as a child, the child knows not that he can have that spine some day.

From one extreme to another - raising children is such a heavy responsibility. It's not meant for everyone.

Oh how tragic theses situations are and how heartrending your eloquent poem is of a heartbroken victim, Line. An important piece. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Oooh! You've captured the essence of the victim of a dominating, abusive parent---and this occurs in the finest families with the finest people...all too often. Well-done, Line. :) gw

Poor kids - it's hard enough to build some self-esteem with the least amount of neglect, how tragic that parents can abuse their children, without a care of the permanent damage they cause. n Thanks for your most appreciated visit and comment, Gershon.
