She Was Once a Child

She was once a child ~
             happy
             bright green eyes
laughing . . .
             chasing bugs in summer lamplight
             tumbled in grasses fresh cut
             cowboy hat, scabby knees
ponytails taken by the wind ....
laughing . . .

She was once a child ~
             berry brown suntanned shoulders
             freckled back
             begging dot-to-dot
lonely . . .
lizards, horny toads and daddy.long.legs share her closet
             secret
playmates in little jars and boxes
lonely . . .

She was once a child ~
lightning rides on cracks of thunder

fractured . . .
             knowing it
             comes on billowing curtains

screaming . . .
             shattered
                  splintered from this world

when once she was a child ~
