She Sits Alone

SHE SITS ALONE (A Haibun poem) She sits alone in a room. Memories to fill her day. She longs for company, a human touch, someone to care. Nurse are rushed, no time to stop and listen. Even a phone call could cheer her day. Her hands once busy with knitting and crochet, are now arthritic and no longer able to work. Someone once said silence is golden To her it's more like a rust bucket. She remembers the time complaining life was too busy, and longed for respite. How things have changed! Suddenly the silence is broken and she smiles. phone rings somebody cares wrong number. Copyright © Vivien Wade 2017

Yes, it unfortunately a scenario that often happens. Out of sight, out of mind. I volunteered in a nursing home for over 10 years, and a lot of lonely people. I just read your poem Two pairs of shoes, which was lovely. I left a comment.

I can see this scenario so clearly. One time I answered the telephone to a guy who had the wrong number and we ended up talking for half an hour. He had such a pleasant voice , so nice....it is funny. Never got his name. I enjoyed your haibun very much Vivien. I loved the ending! : )
