Notes on SHE’LL BE RIGHT
I ask forgiveness from the noble citizens of Australia for this bit of fun with Australian stereotypes. It was prompted by the recollection of an incident in Melbourne many years ago.
I was responsible for moving a $3 million super computer mainframe (about $30 million in today’s money) between levels in a building. The only available method was via a lift (elevator for Americans). The lift capacity, nominally 3 tons was slightly exceeded by weight of the computer.
This was a career threatening decision, so I did some careful investigation and calculation before giving the go-ahead.
The outcome was successful both physically and socially, giving me honorary Australian nationality (only within the group involved) since the story went round that I had said - “She’ll be right!
I realise that Australians often use this phrase with irony, self awareness and self deprecation.
