She could have left him but
She loved us
Loved us more than
Herself
More than self-preservation and
The honest inclination of flight
When there was nothing left
But us
The well of affections left dry
The emptiness of IOU’s and
Good intentions
Such are the ups and downs
Of savings accounts
Of community property
She could have left him but
She loved us
So she prayed for the well
To be filled
And it was
