Shattering Rose Coloured Glasses

Uncomplicated me
I thought I was colour blind
free thinking and kind
with an evolved mind
Loving and accepting
of the ones I find

Yet my blindness
Is that of privilege
I'm just a visitor
in the Global village
From my narrow thin mind
there is too much spillage

Although so many
are forced from their homes
My life seems carefree
I am deaf to the groans
Brown women wearing veils
that can't protect them from stones

I live in a white washed place
No "Freedom Marches"
for men of a different race
Yet, if I look back and trace
there are darker stories to face
We all took part in shameful things
Yes, we share in the disgrace.

Highways of tears
Rivers of shame
There's always
someone else to blame
Residential schools
Each child got a new name
They were forced to forget
the place from where they came

Prisons filled
with black and red skinned men
They can't forget
this now or that then
Promises and promises
but who how and when
Or will their children
have to live it all over again

So yes
No longer colour blind
With the opening of my mind
I let colour seep in
Starting somewhere different
today I begin
Because I know
it shouldn't be
just the privileged who win!

Wow! I am glad you drew my attention to this poem. You certainly have a deep human and honest view of the realities we live with. You brave to point out the prejudices that shadow us. Thank for this.

WoW! Richard, This is poetry at it's finest. I found it to be deep and thought provoking. Sometimes I wish we all ( mankind) can see through the eyes of little kids( before they saw color). At that stage in life ( we) really were color blind. Thanks for writing such a well written and potent write. Congratulations on getting the poem of day. It was well deserved:-) Alexis

As a wise man once said, 'Never look back... there are no birds in last years nests.' Get up each morning and make the world a better place. You are and individual... not some cog in a subset that others put you in. Resist. Their goal is to make you look at one hand while they whittle away at your freedoms with the other. Have a great day my friend.

Another wise man said that if you don’t look at the past you are doomed to repeat it. I think if we are so concerned with our own freedom at the expense of another’s freedom we are not truly free. Thanks for commenting David.

Hello my old friend; sorry I haven't been in touch. The couple back surgeries this year have me a bit exhausted ...mentally I've been a bit stalled. But I'm still kicking lol! I see your mind still expanding; still makes me smile :) Thank you for peeking in on me from time to time. I hope you and your beautiful wife have been well! Take care Rick

"We all took part in shameful things" In Today's World- it is Follow the Leader. When, many should be Standing Up for the Truth. Those Rose Colored Glasses I am looking through, I see the same issues as You. Even through clear glasses, everything looks scrambled. Sad indeed. Congratulations Richard, on Poem of the Day. ~ Brandy

A wonderful thing to be guilty of. I must admit I’m a co conspirator. I too look for the good in people. Most times I can find it. When I can’t, I haven’t looked close enough.

Congratulations, Richard, on your POTD. Having a POTD is a Most pleasant shock. Mine was yesterday. It's a validation of your poem. Whether 60 responses or six. I don't see people of colour or nationality as different. Nor do I see economic staus as a wedge to divide people. Winners win, losers lose. We all have gifts. It's up to us to use them. Congrats to one of the best here. You! Panagiotaxxxxxxxx
