Notes About The Poem

Shadows

I sleep with shadows
hollow dreams of lustful death,
pleasure begets sickness.

Beneath my eyes lies doubt
begging, pleading for grace.

I walk with shadows
consuming objects, life forms, moments–
Illusions of control.

My image dissolves before I do,
my outline fades into absence.

I scream with shadows
giving life to the everlasting eclipse,
our shrouds staining pavements.

Wraiths of darkness rise and scatter
like roots of a dying tree.
I answer to Shadow.

Light brings color and joy.
Looking down at the darkness I cast,
light has no place in my world.

Your excellent poem uses imagery and metaphor to describe inner anguish and gloom. Repeating "I sleep with shadows" and "I walk with shadows" establishes rhythm and emphasizes the metaphor. The poem is easy to read and understand due to its regular structure and flow. Check Soupmail.

Depression can put us in very dark places where even shadows dare to go. Sometimes we have to make our on light out of the dark.
