Shadows

Abuse casts long shadows...
Twilight's purple fingers reaching
through the fog of restless, rowdy dreams.
I thrash and lash, sheets wet with sweat,
and shudder apart at the seams.
Shadowy tentacles of my father's abuse
reach deeply inside; his castigation
an ineradicable stain, that monoxide flame
of gaslighting aimed to shame.
Shadow banned within the home.
Three months pregnant, and shadowy, spectral words
rise up, billowing, like choking smoke
from my own mother's throat:
You'll be no good, you'll never cope.
Shadow darts through the heart.
Hemlock shadows locked within.
Sable-shaded fingerprints on flesh;
violent violet stormclouding my skin.
I sicken as sun coils delicately round daylight,
fade in the tainted shade of rape.
Night-tinted footprints follow me
through soiled streets of shame.
Will I ever outrun these shadows?
Can I escape my own shadow?
Will I ever rest in the velvet violet caress
of my inner evening's soft-petalled shadow?

Thanks for sharing this... and for sharing your talent. Meanwhile, I greet you with the love of the Lord, expressed by John 3:16 of the Bible, "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." Be blessed.

These shadows are awful. While shadows are no longer the real thing, they keep telling their stories... This is heartache; yet your question at the end is such a beautiful expression of longing for peace that , as a reader, I start to long for it too: a soft-petalled place to rest. Thank you for sharing the deep ache and hope. J

Dear Charlotte--I pray you do rest in that shadow - the dues have been paid - you are GOOD, you can COPE, and you are LOVED!! This is soulful writing...well beyond words worthy of your heart...

"I sicken as sun coils delicately round daylight" that is a striking and raw line, Charlotte. I love "velvet violet" as shadow. This is gifted work.

Tremendous feeling went into this… Twilight's purple fingers… Shadowy tentacles… Hemlock shadows locked within. Sable-shaded fingerprints on flesh… Very good!

You will indeed, Pearl. This masterpiece begins the unravelling of a binding leather wrap that has far too long been choking a delicate, delicious, dream-maker soul. POTY without question!!!! Blessed passage...
