Shadow Loss
I fled the fire, I ran for breath,
away from him, away from death.
I thought he was my only light,
but he was just a darker night.
I didn't know that you were there,
a hidden hope, a secret prayer.
But fear is cold and stress is loud,
it wrapped us in a heavy shroud.
The red arrived, the silence grew,
the moment that I finally knew.
The guilt is sharp, a jagged glass,
that cuts me as the seasons pass.
I kept the secret, locked and deep,
a promise that I had to keep.
For to reach out was to return,
back to where the embers burn.
I am fragile, I am small,
the one who stayed to watch it fall.
Forgive the girl oh Lord, who had to fly,
to save herself beneath that angry sky.
