Written Christmas 2023

Remained unfinished as I wasn't sure of its merit.

Decided to get it sorted

So...

It's either two months late or ten months early

_______________

Santa could you help me out, I’m in a dozen shades of doubt Half the world is ‘weapons out’, all the rest just scream and shout “Don’t do this and don’t do that, would you kindly pause your spat?” Arms dealers are getting fat… I can’t afford to heat my flat Grain and fuel are pricing high, body bags in short supply And thousands duck yet thousands die But Santa it’s the time of year to spread a little Christmas cheer And let those that wont listen hear the guns fall silent far and near So Santa could you help me out and sprinkle your goodwill about To link the arms of atheist, agnostic and devout For whilst so many gods abound at every compass point around Can there not be a middle ground But all the world says, “We’re the good,” or, “You’re the villain in the hood,” Or, “You will soon be gone for good.” And diplomats are blocks of wood. So Santa can you clarify the who, the what, the where, the why For far away the people cry and one man says that nukes may fly So war may soon be hereabout, I hope we have sufficient clout Hey, Santa, could you help us out?

History doesn't change, no matter how hard people try to erase it or rewrite it. Oh so many wars fought in the name of Christ. Oh so many fought in the name of Greed, or Power, or Hate, or Love, or.... :)

And history would suggest that you have a point, Linda.

I hope and pray by next Christmas Day all wars will have gone away. Maybe Santa will have some sway and the gift of peace will come to stay. Love the story/poem Terry… Beryl

you've certainly captured the way the world is right now...the chaos that ensues our countries, cultures, and communities. Asking Santa to bring some Xmas cheer now is a brilliant idea, for we need it. Your ability to rhyme while telling this story is truly impressive. enjoy your evening, Sara

Thank you, Sara. This was more or less half done when I put it to one side. The comments here make me pleased that I went back to it. Terry

Terry - this poem would be wonderful at any time of year. You’ve really captured, in beautiful rhyme, what’s going on in the world today. Unfortunately, I think it will still be going on next Christmas and for every future Christmas, but I sure hope I’m wrong…

I suspect you’re right, Ilene. Not a nice thought, either for those already ‘at war’ or those who will be inextricably drawn in. Glad you appreciated my ‘eventually completed’ effort. Terry

Looking at an imaginary list of current world leaders and of those about to join their ranks… any hope of peace on Earth would seem naive. Might as well just cross our fingers and hope for the best. Terry

Dear Terry, You wonderfully capture the complexities and anxieties of our world today, juxtaposed with the hope and longing for peace during the holiday season. Your words convey a sense of urgency and a plea for unity amidst division and conflict. The imagery of Santa symbolizes the universal desire for goodwill and understanding. It does make me reflect on the pressing issues facing humanity and the importance of collective action for a brighter future. - Blessings, Daniel

Thanks, Daniel. Even when I finally posted this I hoped it wouldn’t be a lead ballon. I certainly hadn’t anticipated deeper analysis such as yours. I much appreciate both your visit and your comment. Terry

Perfect timing Terry for what's going on right now, the only people who benefit from wars and conflicts are the arms dealers. Then again mankind in all his stupidity would if arms weren't available, would resort to sticks and stones as murder and violence is in his dna. Tom

I think you’ve summed us up perfectly, Tom. I guess it’s a shame that Santa’s off duty right now! Terry

What a rhyming cornucopia, Terry, even about some worrying stuff. Ten months early is right on time! Hopefully Santa is up to snuff on who profits from war; who profits from borrowing for war; and the corner that those profiteers are backed into due to high interest rates, etc. etc. (all on the naughty list, of course)

Thanks, David. With the lunatics in charge of the political asylum, it does seem that we’re on that proverbial knife edge. Guess we’ll see what we’ll see. Terry
