Notes About The Poem

Speaking of the lean-in for the first kiss, a renowned therapist says many of us are still guided by the 2005 romcom Hitch and the 90:10 rule, where Hitch (Will Smith) tells his mate that the secret to a good kiss is to lean in 90 per cent and then pause, inviting the other person to close the gap. “I actually think 70:30 is a better ratio,” she says. “Ninety per cent might make you feel you’re about to be devoured.”

Seventy-Thirty: First Kiss

Ninety-ten looked clever, written neatly on a page.
Seventy-thirty smiled and quietly took the stage.
Lean in just enough to let love choose the way.
The sweetest kisses pause before they learn to stay.
No stopwatch counts the heartbeat hiding in the air.
No ruler knows the distance brave hearts choose to dare.
A peck becomes a promise if both smiles agrees.
Two laughing hearts rewrite the rules with ease.
The first kiss was never waiting on a chart—
It only knew the distance: heart-to-heart.
