Servant Heart
Servant Heart
In a world of gloomy places
When my foolish heart would take an axe
To the Tree of Life,
Dig up its roots, drain the River,
Make a bonfire of the leaves
With healing for the nations,
Joy on springs
Offers me a servant heart,
Living in the presence of eternal bounty,
That in its deepest olive garden hour
Knows its need for God
Offers not submission but transcendent ambassador
Sent on God’s mission
When hope breeds joy
Bursting from primitive silence -
Eloping into divine verse -
Like a tap root sent deep into blind depths,
Deaf to the reveries of benediction
Taking credit for Heaven’s grace,
My simpleminded heart feeds on manna
To tend the Tree of Life
Born again,
To feed its roots in the mortal wilderness
Wash soiled and weary feet in the River
Make a balm with leaves for healing of the nations
From a servant heart planted in the jewel of ecstasy.
