September Songs (DHR)

I was once a young girl.
I was blonde, brave, confident, creative
And my joints never ached, my height grew overnight
But September always ends, right?
Blow out the birthday candles and embrace a new month
A new year, new challenges, new people to latch onto

At first, it was a young man, who darted across fields
Held his soccer trophies in one hand, his new "girl best friend" in the other.
Perhaps I lacked common sense, maybe I was naive
But losing him was a prolonged funeral, where I'm the only weeping one

Then came his best friend, the idyllic Italian
Seas of dark waves, bronze skin, and doe eyes of chocolate
Yet flexible, not his body, but his morals
By the end of the parties, he'd have moved on already
Kissing somebody who lived in fast forward like he did

I got on my knees and my voice cracked away
If someone up there could hear me, there'd be sympathy
Wishing for light eyes, warm skin, and symmetry
Trying to revise the book my genetics already published

My faith slipped away with my sweet fourteenth
Accepted I'm "ugly", surface-level were my peers
Glancing back at my pictures, my eyes welled with tears
Oh, dear youthful me, you were the pinnacle of beauty!

Would you like to hear about the last boy? The one with a heart
That overflowed with affection and peeled back my skin's layers
His whispers caressed my eardrum with curious compliments
Devotion to my intellect, my mindset, my temperance
Didn't focus his eyes on vulnerable physicality

Septembers slid away like water droplets, unlike his loyalty
And every year, when the number goes up, he'll be back here with me
Holding my hand as I light up the candles,
All of this because I cared too much about the first layer!
