"September, beautiful month of my birth, is nigh, but I cannot feel glad." September, drifting in with glow of moon, you stifle Summer’s ardor. . . and she grieves. In guise of fire, the Fall comes all too soon. Your breath grows cool. You’ll blow and loosen leaves. The hills and woodlands will reflect new hues. You stifle Summer’s ardor. . . and she grieves. In Autumn’s chill, the colors are a ruse! You're passing on, and trees are set ablaze. The hills and woodlands then reflect new hues. Though warmth may linger through your final days, old Sun is waning, yet he still seems strong! You're passing on, and trees are set ablaze. September, you’re a melancholy song. Though time be short, you paint a brilliant dusk! Old sun is waning, yet he still seems strong. October looms. . . Your ending will be brusque. September, drifting in with glow of moon, though time be short, you paint a brilliant dusk. In guise of fire, the Fall comes all too soon. 8/29/11 for the '2022 Poetry Marathon Mile 7' Poetry Contest of Mark Toney

This is a magnificent piece of writing dear Andrea. I’ve read it several times and it’s a new form to me. It’s inspired me to have a go at it after reading your delightful poem with great melancholy. September is my birthday month too. Fellow Virgo’’s? It’s very creative with vivid imagery ‘ trees are set ablaze’. The refrain lines, in particular, are stunning. An inspiring read. Thank you :)

thanks so much. Of my thousands of poems, this one rates like in top 10 or 20 for popularity, maybe I have entered it into so many contests. Yes, we must be fellow Virgos. I am Sept. 5. This form is not easy but it can make a person come up with awesome work.

Andrea, congratulations on your win! Your poem overflows with amazing imagery - "stifle summer's ardor," "melancholy song," "ending will be brusque," "paint a brilliant dusk." This is such a plaintive song by sung summer as summer leaves for autumn. I really enjoyed this wonderful write!

The spirit of September and all its glory is captured through vivid imagery and personification at its best here Andrea. It's the first time Ive read this but certainly not the last. This 11 year old poem must count as one of your top works. The numbers and comments don't lie. Cheers - Gary

I was surprised to not find this one in your Seasonal-Go-Round chapbook, but that left me to assume it must have been included in one of your earlier chapbooks, as this is exceptional. Being that it is about your birth month, I'm guessing it is one of your favorites? It is an EXCELLENT terzanelle, and going straight to my faves.

I find that I want to go into the woods, build a small fire, wait for the fairies and trolls to show up... and then whisper the story of the seasons just to them. Wow. Loved it. Great write. Carnations, Ann

This is delightful, a fav for me. 2nd stanza gave me chills, that's when it began to feel like you were really letting September have it, no holes barred. Loved it. Wanted to try form (will), but he requested OLDer writes (right? read that right). Love the poem ... CayCay (now I get to type PAY in captcha, but my comments are actually free)
