Self Medication

SELF MEDICATION
July 27, 2019

I have self-medicated for 45 years
Let’s review
That’s a long time.
For not having a clue

So what comes to your mind?
He must mean drink.
Not my medication
You still have to think.

That’s not it
Then it must smoke.
Not my medication
But that’s a funny joke.

There are those who
Turn to fitness for their drug.
Not my medication
I’d be better off with a hug.

Anger is an ugly one
People with it just seem to yell.
Not my medication
People hurt all over and may not be well.

Then there is physical touch
Screw everything in sight.
Not my medication
That’s a way you will never find the light.

So I showed it could have been worse
Everyone may have a curse.
Finding yours is up to you
Look at your biggest clue.

My medication is simple
It’s comfort food when I am sad.
But I make up for it with
Comfort food when I’m glad.

This is changing as I speak
Writing about is such relief.
I feel like my boat
Is no longer on the reef.

I believe so pray for me.
It can’t be changed alone.
I’m not going to let this be
Seed for change has now been sown.

Good write. Educational... so many ways to self medicate. Revealing your own way of self medicating at the end of the poem, I can relate to the feeling of being trapped by using when happy and sad. Poetically moving and personally moving. You've broken the chains. And found out you don't have to do this alone. Thank you for sharing. I'll be praying. Congratulations on your poem being featured. __ Tamra

Enjoyed this poem you wrote. Clever and amusing. Thanks for the smile, and leaves food for the thought if you get my drift.
