Self-Respect
SELF-RESPECT
Self-respect,
Prince of my heart,
Crown of my character
Bastion of my dignity
Compass of my life,
Through
Many battles have we been
Against formidable
Opponents
Who has tested our resolve in
Words and deeds many
A time
Expecting to break us
Apart
By tempting me
With their promises:
Of riches
Of positions,
Of fame and
Of pleasures unending
But
Never have I, even considered,
You to betray
For how could I ever allow anyone, you,
From your throne to overthrow
And
Your Jewel’s brightness to dim,
Or your image to tarnish?
For
If I had given in to their
Demands
An empty shell, without
A soul,
Would I have, forever,
Remained!
