a half carved pumpkin on the counter
guts and knives everywhere
oh the thrill

her excitement
my son shakes his head at the two of us
also enjoying himself
we gather pans and sea salt
olive oil
and I watch her take my kitchen over
and I my heart
fills with what is yet to be
