See Mommy

She cried "See Mommy!"
And the anguish grew to such a pitch
I tried to console
In time, she will be here

The idea never stuck
And "See mommy" grew in intensity
We tried chocolate milk
We tried the kitty book
There was no filling the gap
In her tiny psyche

And realizing everything else was a distraction
We just held there in erupting pain
Until her tears dissolved and her heart could breathe
