I'm wondering about our secret selves - 

The vegetarian smoker

The isolationist who speaks Cantonese

The soldier with the peace sign

The blue collar millionaires
The conservative who dares

The scientist who prays
The vagabond who stays

There's more to all of us than what we seem

Oh, so true. We as faraway poets on a website can control how much light we let shine on our true selves for others to see. We as neighbors can put on the happy smile. "Wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door" to quote the Beatles. Self-revelation is the key to maturity imho. Lovely write, Michelle.

Thanks, John - I actually expanded this poem into another one called 'More Secret Selves' where I added more lines to complete the idea, since this one felt a little bare-bones.

Thank you - I know a vegetarian who smokes cigarettes which got me thinking about this.
