Sea of Broken Dreams
Sea of Broken Dreams
By Kevin Robey

He felt the surge of a soul compromised
Seeing the way out of this insanity
Found the razor to unveil his disguise
Pierced his heart that she once set free
The love on his arms was no longer enough
The demons he faced were stronger than drugs
He raised the red flag; dared to call his bluff
Peering down the drain where he pulled the plug
He closed his eyes, found relief with a swipe
A flick of the wrist vaulted the shining knife
Into a flood of relief before a sobering respite
A pause in the act that could end his short life
Rivers of red brought the moment of dread
Oceans like tears flowing from her heart
Regretting immediately what must be said
Inviting the past where they both fell apart
So she closed her eyes, found relief with a knife
Fulfilling her end of the deal they both made
Crying as the crimson washed out her strife
Breaking the promise from which she strayed
She corrected the resolve of the ink on her wrist
Two swipes in an X put her faith in the past
With her promises no longer held in his kiss
She sealed off their love in a box made of glass
Cast off to sea, filled with her care-free memories
She drew a line in the sand as she walked on the beach
Forcing this lonely path despite her desperate pleas
The heart that he broke, and the trust that he breached
He drowned in the sea, surrounded by their memories
That he forgot in this moment of temporary insanity
She recalled the night that brought him to his knees
Then walked away from the sea of broken dreams
