Sea Glass

Sea Glass

Waves
Rolling
Tides
Tumble
The castoff
Shattered
Shards
Of jars
And bottles
Blue, green, umber,
Recalling
Picnics,
Life’s
Laughter -
Seashore trash
Transformed
As
Sea glass
Gems.

A beauty! I like the short, edgey line punch of this poem about a glass sharp sea. Well penned. Best wishes, Brian

Sam, your waltz wave was well written, with smooth flow and a unique topic! If you had centered it, I would have placed it higher. Congrats on your win in my contest! Blessings, Kim M

Thank you Kim for your congrats and gracious placement of Sea Glass even with my mistake! This is a delightful form that truly does waltz down the page! Had as much fun with it as I have had collecting sea glass! One of these days I'll get it right. Blessings!

Thank you so much Paula! The tides and waves of the sea have a way of sculpting trash into opaque treasure. Have always loved collecting bits of sea glass when I can find it! Take good care. Blessings to you my friend!

I have been mesmerized by the ability of this process. A beach in CA, after being used as a dump for years, was cleaned up. When it reopened all the glass had been turned to sparkling gems! Most of the glass gems are gone, carried away by tourists. We lived nearby when I was small. I wonder if our trash ended up there. Maybe some of the sea glass was from our home. A dark midnight blue, an old Vicks bottle. Nostalgic writing! I'm glad the ocean did it's best to make beauty from dreadful chaos.

Glass Beach is in Fort Bragg California. I lived in Milpitas, in the Bay Area when I was young. It was a small town surrounded by orchards and rolling hills. We weren't too far from Gilroy, and bought most of our veggies there, it was so beautiful! I haven't been back for many years It has all changed tremendously since I was a child. I don't know if they hauled our trash to Fort Bragg and dumped it in the ocean in the 1960's, but I've wondered. Sadly the sea glass is disappearing. Some people there wanted to renew it by letting the sea do its work on broken glass way out, I don't think they let them, I haven't read up on it lately. I have heard there are some places that are hard to get to at Glass Beach that still had glass gems, but it is really hard to get to that area! I hope there's still sea glass for you to see if you can go and visit it!

BJ - thank you for your lovely email, your story and your thoughtful pondering! Picking up sea glass treasure as a child is an indelible memory. Sea glass always gets me thinking about the transformative power of the sea. I have to ask you where in CA? We live in northern California. With our recycling efforts will sea glass disappear? Much gratitude for your patience in waiting for my reply - behind again! Blessings to you!

This have a feel of movement and flow, just like the ocean as it meets the beach, I love the imagery of 'seashore trash transformed' into sea glass, beautiful!

Thank you Michelle! Can you tell how far behind I am in answering email? Yikes. I was hoping for that sense of the sculpting motion of the waves and tides. So appreciate your affirmation! Hope you are staying cool in the heat wave!
