Science Calls it The Singularity

Science calls it the Singularity.
Religion calls it God.
God created light.
The Singularity created light.

The Bible speaks of two kinds of light
light on day one,
light on day four.
Science shows two kinds as well:
the cosmic background glow
released after 380,000 years,
and the starlight born millions of years later.
The Bible says creation took seven days
but what is a day
in the life of God?

Genesis tells the story out of order,
yet if you were speaking to people
who did not understand science,
wouldn’t you use the language
they understood.

The Bible says man was made from dust.
Science shows we rose through evolution.
Perhaps evolution was simply the stages
God took to shape life from dust.
DNA carries complex coding.
Complex coding implies
complex design.

Everything is made of atoms.
Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, electrons.
Protons and neutrons are made of quarks.
Ninety-eight percent of a quark
is energy.

Imagine yourself
as the energy of the Universe,
existing with no beginning.
Perhaps you contract into a single point,
becoming the Singularity,
then burst outward.

creating space and time.
A storm of heat and light
and subatomic particles,
a universe of blazing particles
passing energy from one to another
like sparks racing through a new-born storm.

As the Universe cools,
your energy condenses
into the simplest atom hydrogen.
Clouds of hydrogen gather,
forming nebulae.
Gravity pulls, pressure rises,
and fusion ignites.

Part of you becomes
the first massive star.
For the second time,
light spills across the Universe.
More stars form.
Fusion builds heavier elements,
climbing the periodic ladder
until the great stars collapse,
exploding into supernovae,
scattering silver, nickel, iron, lead
every element of life
thrown like seeds
into the darkness of space.
Gravity gathers dust and particles,
shaping planets.
The tug-of-war
between gravity and the vacuum,
between dark matter and dark energy,
keeps each world in motion.
Earth forms
a barren sphere of molten heat.
Heavier metals sink inward,
forming a magnetic core.
Hydrogen meets oxygen
and water appears.

Your thoughts become designs.
You begin with the simplest spark
a single cell, microscopic, alive.
Ideas build on ideas.
Plants rise, breathing in carbon,
breathing out air.

Animals follow,
breathing oxygen,
returning carbon.
An atmosphere forms,
a shield against falling meteorites.
Every animal has a predator.
Viruses and bacteria
the planet needs finite life
for finite resources.
