School Desks, That Fly

My desk was constructed of
genuine wood, with seat attached.
No, not movable as they are today.
Highly polished with an ink
well, as we used fountain pens!
Books? You lifted the top
and in they went.
We had leather schoolbags
that went below.

Later, when I was a teacher,
they were light as you see today.
Since I taught in the wildest schools,
misbehaving pupils used them in
fights,not for play!

At these times, chairs became objects
of flight.
To the students' joyous delight.
I'd dream of the days of yore!
When children were well-behaved and had
morals that counted ever so much more.
And desks were nailed firmly to the floor!

I think every school in the world had them, solid wood with an inkwell. They don't make them like that anymore, Happy days Pangie. Tom

Going way back to my early years in school I am familiar with those desks. It is sad how mal-behaved kids can be today. They have too many devices and too many freedoms. I enjoyed your journey into the past. I am sure you are a wonderful teacher Panagiota. Blessings xxoo

Hello Connie... Like Darlene, you, too had a desk like that? How very cool! Mal-behaved, is a sweet word. I have another word!)) I cannot list how many beatings I witnesses, girls with pierced ears, torn open. Terrible. I have been shot at by snipers and other teachers. They had their noses broken by students and cars stolen. It took me a long time to get out of schools and seek other work. Teaching went well in San Franncisco till the FED government stepped in. I left after that and worked in the Cable Industry. Where sanity ruled. I can't imagine teaching today. Your life is on the line in many public schools. Hugs, Panagiota xx

Hello Panagiota, yes it is best that the desks are nailed to the floors. I also remember children fighting in the class room when i was in school. Hugs Darlene xx

Oh, glad you, too had one! Such cool desks. The wood was beautiful. The USA needs to nail desks down. Big kids even throw these cheap desks around. I am talking about muscular 6th graders, not little kids. Fighting, punching slapping goes on in earlier grades. Add obasene language fom 7 year olds. It was a nightmare. Glad we had similar desks! Hogs, Pangie xx
