Fascinating - I looked up the phrase and ran across this - c'est la vie, c'est la guerre, c'est la pomme de terre - literally, "that's life, that's the war, that's the potato". More an expression of fate/destiny, and a very pessimistic view of what should be the most exciting thing - life! Thanks for the poem and the thoughts! I also like these plays with words that have worked their way into our vocabulary from other languages, mostly intact, but lacking original context.

Thanks so much Jeff, I'm also very keen on word play and word origins, etc... As for "life; war, and potatoes", the Irish half of my family laughs...
