_______________

“If you judge me by Divine Muses, you will know I escaped the gloom of Hades and that no day will ever dawn that does not speak the name of Sappho, the Lyric Poet” : Sappho

 Verse 1

Illustrious foremost poetess in Western history
born some six hundred years BC, a mystery
on abundant exotic eastern island called Lesbos
erotic enigma, fearlessly sang surreal manifestos

CHORUS

Vampish charming silver moon alone at the sea
lyrically capturing hearts and souls to be free
with lyre gallantly her poems enthralled hours
of love, lust, longing, passion and powers

her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal

Verse 2

Sappho, a name androgynous, sublimely piercing
transcendent flame burning lush pioneering
alpha female genius knowing power of words
ancient inner complexes voiced startling birds

CHORUS

Vampish charming silver moon alone at the sea
lyrically capturing hearts and souls to be free
with lyre gallantly her poems enthralled hours
of love, lust, longing, passion and powers

her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal

BRIDGE

Alas ! Heart too ardent for her times, agree
standing on a ledge before beloved Aegean sea
threw herself into timeless waters, Aphrodite screamed
Love unrequitted unbearable, Sappho's essence beamed

her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal

CHORUS

Vampish charming silver moon alone at the sea
lyrically capturing hearts and souls to be free
with lyre gallantly her poems enthralled hours
of love, lust, longing, passion and powers

her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal

Verse 3

Few speak of her shrewd political strategies
wise financial tactics or exiled trauma agonies
this, Roman rule obscured to demean her censoring Sappho’s greatness as femme teacher

CHORUS

Vampish charming silver moon alone at the sea
lyrically capturing hearts and souls to be free
with lyre gallantly her poems enthralled hours
of love, lust, longing, passion and powers

her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal

Verse 4

Hailed alongside goddesses as the tenth Muse
beauty immortalised marbled on vases and statues
she recast sexuality as elysian sacred untamed
Sappho’s poems live on, though most are maimed

CHORUS

Vampish charming silver moon alone at the sea
lyrically capturing hearts and souls to be free
with lyre gallantly her poems enthralled hours
of love, lust, longing, passion and powers

her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal

This caught my eye as I started off writing Lyrical Poetry & occasionally still return to it. Sensual & proudly feminist, it's a real joy to read. A great feminism song I think you'll love is I Can Be Your Mother by Sofia Isella ‧ 2025 If you are a fan of Ethel Cain, you'll love it.

Congratulations! It's moving me to places & faces of ancients, an extremely prolific lyrical pleasure. "her spirit dances in quivering silence of Woman, feel an ideal" love that! xo

Dear Ghairo, this tribute to Sappho carries such reverence and musicality. I really enjoyed the way you wove history, myth, and emotion into a lyric that feels both ancient and alive. Such a haunting, ceremonial rhythm. Beautifully done. Winter Blessings, Ghairo, Daniel

My own heart aligns with this view after having a lucid dream, after writing this lyric, where Sappho indicates she died in exile. The vision disappeared before I could extract whether this was in Sicily or Egypt. Either way, Sappho’s life was tragic because of how Roman rule, at the time, ridiculed her far-sighted outspoken views on philosophy, politics & love. Authorities belittled her, fearing her outstanding leadership & growing following, exiling the Poet-Leader.

Very interesting Ghairo! Sappho’s statue remains the only extant piece of evidence explicitly linking Sappho to Sicily by the time of the Parian Marble, I read, who really knows we can only imagine~

Poet’s Note : This lyric parallels view that Sappho drowned by throwing herself into the sea. A theory exists that she did not commit suicide, based on findings of papyrus found in Egypt attributed to Sappho, written in Sapphic Verse, where poet accounts old age & knee stiffness.
