Sand Castles

Did you ever hear the lapping
of the tide as it comes in?
                              Ever closer,
                                  never backing away.

As I strengthen my castle walls,
                                   against its ever constant progress,
I know that I am doomed.

                                 As the first wave crashes
                                     through the walls,
                                  I know all is lost.

                                  The second, and then
                                        the third.
                                 Sometimes my life feels like
                                      that castle,
                                  Awashed.
