Sanctuary
Sanctuary
the doorway to his world
was in his pocketbook
a broken man lied dying
who believed the earth once shook
so when i saw him crying
as he reached toward the sky
i reached back out toward him
and simply asked him why
he said every single dollar
i ever made has now been spent
i have nothing left to show for it
i have not a single cent
no one nowhere nothing
your now my only friend
i am on a sacred journey
your beginning is my end
i felt i always knew him
as he passed into the night
but the dying of his fire
made me look toward the light
that is where i saw the man
pointing somewhere in the glare
i held my new friend tightly
as he joined him over there
the last thing that i heard
as i watched him fade to black
was thank you; you have saved me
your debt has been paid back
i swear that's how this sinner
who dug himself the deepest hole
earned the wings to fly to heaven
even though he sold his soul
