Sam Came Out of the Woods Today
Sam came out of the woods today,
With his hair and his eyes looking so gray,
The gray of the walls were full of moss,
He stood in the sun and looked so ill
Walking up the wooded valley and wooded hill.
He stood in the western wind, pipes in hand,
On a height of naked pasture land;
With all the countries he did command
Warm raindrops softly embrace his face,
Leaving naked soul to heal.
Inside his heart he only saw pain,
He knew one day there would be peace,
Trying so hard not to go insane
Homeless children with clicking heels,
Seeing so little they have no meals.
He tossed his pipes, so far he couldn't reach,
Into a new world too hard to teach,
Hearing the sign of the blue warbler screech
The whimpering of the kestrel sat behind the sun,
Taking in the music before going on the run.
Times have changed from the past,
Pipes held less power, making them unable to last,
Juniper full of fruited bough
The fragile blue clustered air we breathe,
Such aimless sign of relieve.
