I've never tried Sudoku...I'm a crosswords man...and I'm only so-so in the cooking department, but I really did enjoy reading this entertaining piece, Howard. Congrats on placing so well in the contest.

Congratulations on placing at the top in my first ever contest! Straight out of the gate, this was a pure delight to read. Your expert use of descriptive language surpasses even your Sudoku skills, I imagine. Your piece has depth in way that is hard to articulate but very easy to experience; the writing feels generous and genuine in equal measures. I found myself discovering new meaning and parallels upon every re-reading, of which there were many. Excellent work!
