Sad Is the Day

Sad is the day when,
At such a tender age as twenty,
A young woman must hang her head
And say…
I will never be loved again

Sad is the day when the smile is lost,
Forever, from her rosy lips;
When the heat of passion in the
Core of her heart is forever doused
When she knows that from this day forth,
She will spend her nights alone and cold,
As the last bloom slowly dying
In the grip of winter’s chill

Sad is the day when, branded and scarred,
She drifts through the marketplace,
A drab black reject with a funereal air,
Her eyes glimmering with unshed tears;
Solitary but for the ghost of him, who left her,
Hovering always in her wake,
Reminding her of the days they walked
Hand in warm soft hand

Sad is the day when a girl so young
Should become a bitter, jaded dragon;
A breathing monument to solitude,
With her eyes of stone and granite smile,
Her blackened heart, forging that wall she has built
To keep all other suitors out –
A wall built because she only ever wanted him;
But he is gone now, and the wall still stands,
So even when she longs for a man’s touch,
She can never let one in

Sad is the day when, pining and pitiful,
The abandoned woman sits by her window,
Bottle of cheap chardonnay in one hand –
Fistful of Xanax in the other, and decides
To take her life –
She just can’t stand the loneliness anymore
Can’t stand the yearning for He Who Rejected,
For that heartless soul who ruined her;
Ruined her so that the pain of living supersedes
The brief and vicious pain of death
A pain that begins with the first searing swallow of wine,
With the first three pills that slide down her tender throat

Sad is the day when suicide follows a broken heart -
When all love reaps is hatred and death,
When a bright little soul is stamped on by booted feet;
And a young girl’s smile lost forever to this world,
All because of one man’s selfishness
And the failure of a dream,
That once shone so bright…
Sad is the day indeed,
And sadder still the empty moonless night
