Roses

Velvety Petals on roses
sit on top of a thorny stem
planted in the muddy soil
crowned the side of the garden.

Dear Miranda, what a lovely image of roses, and I loved the contrast between their velvety petals and thorny stems. I really feel it captures the complexities of beauty and strength. My wife is a flower and plant girl and she definitely has a green thumb. She also will enjoy your poem for it’s a gentle yet evocative reflection. Winter Blessings, My Dear Friend, Daniel

My grandparents on mom's side of the family have a green thumb, and they had great little gardens around the yard where they lived.

Your poem has a simple yet effective contrast between beauty and resilience. The "velvety petals" evoke softness and elegance, while the "thorny stem" and "muddy soil" ground the image in something raw and real. The last line, "crowned the side of the garden," gives the roses a regal presence, as if they stand in quiet majesty despite their rough surroundings. Beautiful!!
