Notes About The Poem

Linking Pin Sonnet Form Description: Linking Pin Sonnet is an innovative poetic form invented by Dr. Joseph S. Spence Sr. on January 15, 2007, while he was studying English literature, creative writing, Greek mythology, Japanese linguistics, Celtic studies, and African Diaspora at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. Structurally, the form contains fourteen lines, each written in eight to eleven syllables, consistent with the rhythmic expectations of traditional sonnet architecture.

Its defining characteristic is the sequential linkage between lines: the final word of each line becomes the first word of the next, producing an unbroken chain of thought. This stylistic innovation derives from the Linking Pin Principle Dr. Spence first encountered during his business management studies at the University of Maryland, College Park (1980). In organizational leadership theory, a linking pin connects one echelon of an organization to another, ensuring coordinated movement, strengthened communication, cohesive direction, and unified completion of mission objectives.

Applied poetically, the Linking Pin Sonnet mirrors this principle by encouraging readers to visualize each line as a pin connecting to the next—reinforcing structural integrity, creative cohesion, and expressive continuity. Just as each leadership echelon is strengthened through connection, each poetic line gains resonance, momentum, and collective purpose through its linkage.

This sonnet form can also be compared to the interlocking links of a bicycle chain, each essential for forward motion. Likewise, it evokes the harmonic unity of two lovers singing from the same sheet of music, moving together, strengthening each other, overcoming obstacles, and journeying toward shared goals of success and victory. This symbolic linkage resonates deeply with the African American wedding tradition of “jumping the broom,” representing union, alignment, harmony, and the merging of two paths into one.

Crystallized in poetic form thirty-seven years after its conceptual origin, the Linking Pin Sonnet stands as a dynamic fusion of leadership theory, literary innovation, cultural symbolism, and creative continuity—advancing the sonnet tradition through its unique and purposeful interconnectedness.

Rosa Parks Peace Pursuit Person-Linking Pin Sonnet

Destined a red rose, as her tired feet were that day
Day she stepped on the bus, she sat where she should
Should, upfront, where she belongs, so peacefully
Peacefully, with fortitude, seeking equality and justice.

Justice she never thought would come with such liberty
Liberty divinely shining, smiling eloquently, abundantly
Abundantly with God’s fortitude, her aching feet planted
Planted to move not, like a tree rooted beside still waters.

Waters of stillness in her soul, running deep, led by God
God leading her through the valley of the shadow of death
Death where the Lord is her Shepherd—she feared no evil
Evil, His rod and staff protect her with goodness and mercy.

Mercy, she shows all the days of her life compassionately
Compassionately, with reverence and love for humanity.
