Roots of Betrayal

Every word, every betrayal,
 Cuts deeper into the ruts,
Digging each one we planted up
 Some long, some short,
 But indeed they’re deep.
We grew like twin roots twisting,
Buried in the same dark earth,
 Holding each other through storms,
 Believing the tangle meant worth.
But cracks formed in the silence,
In the truths you chose to hide,
And the soil that once held us steady
 Shifted slowly from your side.
Promises we watered together
 Now wither in your shade,
For even the strongest roots can rot
 When trust begins to fade.
And though our roots were woven,
 Bound tightly, heart to heart,
 Your betrayal snapped the branches
 And pulled our worlds apart.
Still, beneath the broken ground,
I feel the pieces of what we were
A forest that could’ve grown forever,
If only your roots had stayed true to mine
