rolled paper

boudoir lined with glass

      reflecting many faces

  last of rolled paper

dabbed on her eye- shadowed lids --

tears crashing for lost youth's gloss.

An excellent traditional tanka, reflecting visual and emotional moments, culminating in the acceptance that "youth's gloss" loses its shine to the passing of years.....yet I know of people who learn the art of "aging gracefully" 😊~ Warm regards // paul

I want to say I appreciate you supporting my contest by writing a poem just for it. Yes, I think every woman has like Eve after having to leave the garden many years later seeing her reflection must have cried bitter tears because of the aging process. Congratulations on your work being on the winner's list. Way to go!!👏✍️. Sara K.

This is a beautifully crafted tanka, Nette. You've navigated the traditional 5-7-5-7-7 syllable structure perfectly while capturing such a poignant, vivid scene. The imagery of the "boudoir lined with glass" brilliantly amplifies the themes of vanity and inescapable reflection, and that final line—"tears crashing for lost youth's gloss"—delivers a powerful emotional impact. A truly striking and resonant piece!

Nette, what do I even say! You really outshined with this one! Honestly! Your interpretation for this contest is really off the charts.. and it's beyond melancholic, brought tears to my heart.. how we tend to bury ache beneath all the gloss.. and the way the eyelids finally let the secret open.. sigh. One of the best ones I've read! On this theme! "dabbed on her eye- shadowed lids-- tears crashing for lost youth's gloss." How poetic! And ingeniously creative! Best of luck, sending love, hugsz 🌹🌹🌙💫💫
