Rockaway, NY

Ten mile peninsula in Queens, N.Y., nighttime jetties of moonlight white caps, waves rising and ebbing. My grandfather walking with me on the daylight shore so many summers ago. My dreams of Rockaway unfaded. Watched the WTC twin towers being built through binoculars. Rockaway, in my soul's nostalgia you still beckon. Salted lips quenched by Coca-Cola. The youth within me can still hear the seagulls calling in the breeze, and still see the amusement park under 4th of July fireworks. Dada, I miss you and Rockaway.

As you might imagine, I've been to Far Rockaway a few times, and I know a number of people who live or have lived there. It sure is nice along the ocean. Smiles, Gershon

Hi Gershon, my mother grew up in Far Rockaway. Interesting that you have that connection to it, and also know people that do. I went up in the WTC tower four times, and gazed out over Rockaway. Thank you so much for reading and commenting on my Rockaway poem. A creative day to you, poetry friend. :)

Love this! Could see you there and I have never been there! Summer walks with my Grandgapppfath eneded when I was 12. I was crushed……he was my babysiiter when I was young. His death rocked my world. He was cherished by all my friends. We would jump on him on the couch and snuggle, a Fav Pangie xx

Ahh!! Such pleasant memories for you. I know from seeing my grandchildren with my husband and then seeing our step-granddaughters with their grandfather how wonderful it is for them to have someone like that in their lives. Grandparents leave a lasting impression with their grandchildren. Thanks for sharing this one with us and for dropping by my page. Sara K
