Roadkill

I’m a passing thought
Looking at me quickly before turning away.
“Poor thing”
You’ll say to no one listening.
“So sad”
You’ll say it because it’s the proper thing to do,
But do you mean it?

I’m still here, even when you move on.
Remember this moment,
curled up on the side of the road.
Live in this feeling of disgust
with my eyes glazed, staring you down.

I’m a reminder
The ugly truth of how brief this all is.
How temporary your comfort will last.
Remember this moment.
