Notes About The Poem

Written 12/20/2020

Note: We were wed 65 years in June 2023
I enrolled in college at age 39 and received
my BA in English at age 45- so I finally
got to travel both!

Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged- my late teen years; I wasn't meant to travel both. Alone I stood, eyes filled with tears and looked down first, with hopes, yet fears- not knowing which would lead to growth. Looked down the second; in my view, which did seem better in a way- much more a sunny path- seemed true. I thought again- which way would do to fill my dreams where purpose lay. Road, leading left, with courses, lined; the prize was my college degree. Road, leading right- much on my mind, a better match I could not find- handsome Marine in love with me! I tell you this, with a sweet sigh- down that on right, I quickly ran! My love for him- could not deny! To parents, dear, I said goodbye. Sixty years plus- still love that man!

Your priorities were in order, Sandra. Your heart made love a priority, and the road to an education was not forsaken, just postponed.

Thank you, Jenna, for your visit and supportive comment. It was difficult since my parents wanted me to attend college right after high school. Happily, my Dad was still with us when I finally graduated- and I am sure that my Mom was so pleased watching from above. Hugs, Sandra
