River Stars

The river holds this night with its myriad stars,
it reflects a rippling cosmos above and below.

More than this, as I look deeper,
I sense a bygone starlight,
as if all that ever was floats as a dream
and all that is now and will be
belongs to its movement
as it meanders into tomorrow.

There is an ancient glow on the water tonight
the long drowned row upon it as spirit lights,
time travelling moments float upon its surface.
and as I gaze mesmerized
I also become one with this rivering.

The river moves beneath the shadow of Kentucky
where a glistening moon fetches up on tangling reeds.
Ohio river, you are a flood
of all that has gone, and all that is to come!

The stars look up from your furthermost depths.
to gleam in every watching eye.
