As sentient beings, we take our nourishment
From a river of feelings flowing throughout our landscapes.
It flows through our senses, taking form in morning goldfinch songs,
Or distant church bells ringing, overwhelming us with the laughter
Of children as they play, surprising us in tastes of cold watermelon,
Or ice cream on a hot day. It is as soothing as a piece of warm buttered toast
On a cold morning, Tickles us with aromas and tastes of hot coffee,
Lingers over us with garden scents throughout our day.
It may appear as startled gasps at sunset’s beauty, bold flowers or
An unexpected loved one’s face. We feel it in the brushed moist lips
Of those we love pressing soft upon our skin. It is most deeply felt
As the grip of sons or daughters as their tiny hands grasp our finger
For the first time. It is what we know of life. It is our poetry.
