Right In Front of My Eyes

Every time you light a cigarette
All you want to do is forget
Forget the past and the future
For years you've smoked away
You smoked and smoked and never quit
Suicide is that your thought?
Never thought once about your children
Whom lie there forever sleeping
Out there in the bitter cold
Without any coats on to keep them warm?
So what you've decided
Is to end it all right now,
You kept asking me if it's alright to
And my answer is always NO
NO it isn't alright to just decide to commit suicide
Too short of a life we have to live
And here you go and make it even shorter
By killing yourself you're killing a part of us too
Without realizing it you're gone
Before we can even save you
To watch you light a cigarette
And watch you smoke it
Would be to watch you slowly die
Right In Front Of My Eyes

Ellie, welcome to Poetry Soup. You have written what almost every child of a smoker or a couple of smoker thinks. We used to call cigarettes "cancer sticks" for a good reason. Good poem. Poignant.
