Return of Summer Song
A magnolia tree stands tall by my window
On a bent bough stretching out green to me
From the nest of twig web a sparrow
Tweets to me the tune of summer song.
The nest falls with the leaves in winter of despair
The homeless sparrow can’t bear the wind chill
Disappears beyond the edge of dismal freeze
Leaving the last echo of its song by my window.
The bare branch waits for the verdant sprout
That I look for out of the window on gloomy days
I hear the sparrow’s chirp resonate at new sunrise
In the winter of discontent my summer song returns.
